Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 600,000 lives each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Often, heart disease develops silently as plaque builds up in the arteries over time, causing them to narrow and reduce blood flow to the heart.
That’s why a regular checkup with your doctor, with blood work, on an annual basis is so important.
Guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the American Heart Association include recommendations to work with your doctor to monitor six different numbers that can be an indicator of your heart disease risk.

If sales of outdoor heaters and fire pits are any indication, people are planning to spend more time outdoors this winter than in winters past.
And while outdoor activities can help limit exposure to the coronavirus, freezing temperatures along with snowy, icy conditions bring their own set of hazards.

Bundle up. Jack Frost may be a fictional character, but hypothermia and frostbite are very real conditions that can have significant consequences. In fact, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hundreds of Americans die each year from hypothermia.

St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J. is the only hospital in the state to receive straight-A s in the Leapfrog safety report card since the surveys began in 2012.

New Jersey hospitals rank 17th best in the nation for safety, a drop from eighth place a year ago and a potentially troubling sign as the pandemic continues to make unrelenting demands on healthcare professionals, according to the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety report card.
Six hospitals went up a grade while 15 hospitals went down a grade, according to an analysis by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute, a consumer, research nonprofit that jointly releases the report with Leapfrog.
