COVID-19: Daily update on coronavirus cases in Erie County, statewide

Erie Times-News staff The Pennsylvania Department of Health on Sunday reported 116 new COVID-19 cases in Erie County and 4,884 new positive cases statewide. Erie County has 11,205 total cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic started. As of Saturday, the state reporting dashboard showed, there were 112 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Erie County, 62 of them in adult intensive care unit beds. There were 13 patients on ventilators. A total of 49,793 negative COVID-19 tests have been reported in the county. Statewide, the total number of cases is now 610,025. There were 127 new deaths across the state, increasing the total to 15,010. In Pennsylvania, 5,905 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized as of Saturday, 20 fewer than Saturday. There were 1,145 patients in adult ICU beds, 51 fewer than Saturday. There were 742 ventilators in use.

To date, there have been 14,718 Pennsylvanians who have died from covid-related illness. Out of the state’s total deaths, 8,412 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities. The county posting the highest number of new cases was again Allegheny, with 912 additions Thursday. It was followed by Philadelphia (739), Montgomery (488), Lancaster (413), Bucks (397), Lehigh (394) and Westmoreland (368). Through Dec. 24, Philadelphia has seen the highest number of new cases (21,756), although Allegheny is closing in fast with 20,643. With 8,314 cases, Westmoreland County ranks 7th in the state in December.

Nursing home residents and employees in Erie County will begin receiving Pfizer s COVID-19 vaccine on Monday. Residents and staff at LECOM Senior Living Center, 5535 Peach St., will be vaccinated by represenatives of Walgreens, LECOM Health officials said in an news release. The chain pharmacy is working with LECOM Health through the federal government s Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program. Other long-term care facilities across the state will be vaccinating residents that day, said Rachel Levine, M.D., Pennsylvania Secretary of Health. The vaccine is a nice holiday gift, James Lin, D.O., president of the LECOM Institute for Successful Aging LECOM, said earlier this week. The last eight weeks have been difficult for the local long-term care facilities.

The new positive tests bring the state’s total to 581,156 and the newly added deaths raise the state’s total to 14,442. Pennsylvania’s seven-day average of new cases dropped to 8,827 after hitting a peak of 10,579 on Dec. 16. Allegheny County had the most new cases in the state, followed by Philadelphia (624), York (565), Montgomery (470) and Lancaster (469).
