Employers struggling to keep up with unemployment fraud cases hope new precautions will cut down on scammers placing fake claims in workers names.Unemployment benefits fraud has been on the rise since Pennsylvania launched a new unemployment system in June.Beth McMaster, the vice president of operations for a not-for-profit in Cumberland County, said unemployment checks were sent to employees who didn t request them. She s shocked money went out for bogus claims filed this month. When other individuals who rightfully should be able to file for unemployment can t get in, she said.McMaster said in many cases, her employees are finding out about the bogus claims when they open their mailbox and find a real check for a fraudulent claim.Pennsylvania s Department of Labor & Industry is trying to address that problem by expanding the use of an identity verification system already used for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits.
