CHESTER COUNTY, PA The Department of Environmental Protection on Earth Day sent investigators to Marsh Creek Lake to collect samples of an unidentified substance reported on the banks of the lake.
A DEP spokesperson said the department has taken samples of gray muddy clay deposits showing up in Marsh Creek Lake near the site of a more than 8,000-gallon drilling fluid spill into the wetlands in August 2020. Sunoco s Mariner East 2 pipeline construction was halted after the accident, and an effort has been ongoing to reroute the pipeline around the state parklands. Read that report from August 2020 here.

Millcreek Township is making accessibility its modus operandi this summer, with one major parks and recreation project set to begin and another pending.
Scott Park, a popular nominee in a number of our Best of Erie outdoor categories, is officially on the books for $120,000 worth of improvements. Of that money, $98,000 will go toward the construction of new pedestrian walkways and ADA-compliant spectator areas alongside its ballfields, contracted through Lindy Paving. The latter phases of the project, tabbed for completion in late summer, will add new bleachers and park benches after the new pavement is laid down. The majority of the funding was delivered through a $77,000 Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant.
Warmer spring weather might have area residents inclined to have a campfire or barbeque.
But even with recent precipitation, officials say to be cautious, noting that the local fire danger is still high.
“The fire danger is above normal right now, even though we’ve had some precipitation,” said Bob Wetzel, district forester for the Gallitzin State Forest. “We’ve had some rain, but we’re not in the clear yet.”
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the greatest risk of wildfires is in March, April and May because of dry conditions.
Tim Yeager, assistant park manager at Prince Gallitzin State Park in Patton, said fires can progress rapidly in the spring due to windy and dry conditions.
