A mountaintop forest fire that began Sunday afternoon at Camp Tuckahoe in the Dillsburg, York County area destroying nearly 150 acres is under investigation, according to a Michaux State forest official.
District Forester Roy Brubaker at the Michaux State Forest said the initial call came in at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. About 12 hours later, most of the fire units had cleared, with forestry trucks remaining to monitor the area for any flare-ups, according to York County 911.
Michaux State Forest spans three counties, Cumberland, Franklin and Adams. Camp Tuckahoe is a Boy Scout facility used year-round, according to the New Birth of Freedom Council website.
A National Weather Service Fire Weather Watch continues through today for Franklin, Adams, York counties, and many surrounding counties.
With humidity near 20 percent and light winds with gusts up to 30 mph, conditions are favorable to spread fire.
A large brush fire in Franklin County Saturday consumed 100 acres near Amberson Road, according to a post on the West End Fire & Rescue Company s Facebook page.
The fire company said in the post that the steep terrain of the mountain, coupled with plenty of ground fuels to assist with fire spread made fire attack difficult.
The fire has been turned over to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and will continue to burn as it is extinguished for the next couple days, according to the fire company.
Central Pennsylvania is under a fire weather watch starting Sunday morning and ending Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service at State College. A fire weather watch means that a combination of factors - strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels - could cause fires to spread rapidly. Wind speeds are expected to be 10 to 20 mph with wind gusts up to 30 mph, according .
