Buchanan State Forest expands with new acreage

Buchanan State Forest now covers 71,802 acres in Franklin, Fulton and Bedford counties following the addition of 119 forested acres in Southampton Township, Bedford County.
The new acreage was protected and transferred into the state forest by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, which has added more than 2,300 acres to Buchanan State Forest since 2007.
A forest of oak, black birch, hickory, black gum and white pine trees make up the newly conserved property located in the headwaters of Town Creek, which the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has designated as a high quality coldwater fishery that provides anglers opportunities to fish for wild trout.

Increases will range from 4.8-49.1 percent and average 18.8 percent.
In announcing the new rates, DCNR said, “The updated price schedule is needed to fine-tune the existing rates and to increase revenue to the Bureau (of State Parks.
“In addition, the schedule, which is comparable to those of state parks in neighboring states, will narrow the gap between state parks in this Commonwealth and private facilities, resulting in a more favorable competitive climate for the private sector.”
The new weekly rental rate for modern family cabins will increase to $449-816 for state residents and $536-897 for non-residents; rustic cabins, $212-578 for residents and $256-680 for non-residents; deluxe cottages, $346-517 for residents and $415-626 for non-residents; camping cottages, $235-339 for residents and $279-370 for non-residents; and yurts, $266-430 for residents and $346-556 for non-residents.

Winding through northwestern Pennsylvania, connecting Pymatuning and Shenango lakes with the Beaver River via 82 miles of scenic, peaceful river, the Shenango River has been voted the state’s 2021 River of the Year.
The Pennsylvania Organization for Waterways and Rivers and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources invited the public to vote online to choose from among 5 waterways across the state.
Other waterways nominated were Buffalo Creek in Allegheny, Armstrong and Butler counties; Lehigh River in Carbon, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Northampton and Wayne counties; Loyalhanna Creek in Westmoreland County; and Tunkhannock Creek in Susquehanna and Wyoming counties.
