LAUREL RUN â The Luzerne County Coronerâs Office on Tuesday identified the man killed in a crash involving a cement truck Monday on Laurel Run Road.
Louis Walkowiak, 62, died of multiple traumatic injuries from the crash, which occurred around 11:30 a.m., according to a press release.
Dr. Charles Siebert performed an autopsy earlier Tuesday.
The manner of Walkowiakâs death is pending investigation by state police Troop P in Wyoming, the county district attorneyâs office and the coronerâs office, according to the press release.
Police had said Monday that the driver of a pickup involved in the crash had died. Neither police on Monday nor the coronerâs office on Tuesday identified the driver of the cement truck.
Another truck-damaged bridge spanning Interstate 90 is about to come down in western Erie County.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Wednesday morning that the bridge carrying Route 215 over the interstate in Springfield Township will be torn down following a crash on Monday night that damaged the span.
The demolition is expected to begin Wednesday night and continue through Tuesday. Traffic along I-90 eastbound and westbound will be rerouted around the demolition area by using the on- and off-ramps of Route 215. Drivers wishing to exit I-90 at Route 215 should follow the detour signs for the direction they would like to travel, PennDOT reported.
Laurel Run Road in Laurel Run was shut down for several hours Monday due to a fatal crash involving a cement truck and a pickup truck.
The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. on the notoriously steep and windy road that plays host to the Giants Despair Hillclimb car race.
Authorities say the driver of the pickup truck died in the crash.
No further information was released.
State police at Wyoming are investigating.
Luzerne County Coroner Frank Hacken said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Jessica Kalinoski, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said the agency is looking into all restrictions and permitting requirements to determine if the cement truck was legally on the road.
GIRARD A bridge spanning Interstate 90 that is slated for replacement in the near future is being evaluated by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials after it was damaged by a passing vehicle in Springfield Township on Monday night.
One eastbound lane of I-90 remained closed on Tuesday in the area of the Route 215 bridge, which was struck by the load on a passing truck, according to PennDOT. Also closed on Tuesday was the shoulder of the northbound lane of Route 215 on the bridge.
PennDOT reported the crash and the lane closure early Tuesday morning. The Pennsylvania State Police had not released any details on the crash, including when it happened on Monday night, as of early Tuesday afternoon.
