Less than a day after right-wing protesters stormed and vandalized the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to try to stop Congress from certifying the presidential election for Democrat Joe Biden, seven of North Carolina’s 10 Republican members of Congress voted early Thursday to reject some of Biden’s winning results over Republican President Donald Trump.
These included U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, who serves Fayetteville and Fort Bragg America’s largest military base by number of personnel. The other lawmakers were Reps. Virginia Foxx, David Rouzer, Greg Murphy, Madison Cawthorn, Tedd Budd and Dan Bishop.
Their objections failed; had they succeeded, Congress might not have accepted the Electoral College votes from those states, possibly blocking Biden from taking office. Republican U.S. Sen. US Capitol police chief resigns
A spokeswoman for the United States Capitol Police has confirmed to ABC News that Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund is resigning, effective Jan. 16.
The resignation comes after rioters seized the Capitol building on Wednesday and following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling for him to step down due to the botched response.
