Kiwanis, other service clubs make Abilene a better community
Our view
One was that reviewing their history year by year reflected local history, and history in general.
Not even 10 years old, the club had to battle through the Great Depression like the rest of America. Then came war and the social upheaval of the 1960s. Membership and the club s ability to serve were affected by the events of the day.
Kiwanis eventually abandoned its men-only membership, as did other organizations that opened doors to women. The positive effect of being inclusive quickly was seen. This was a national trend for clubs, as diversity focused on people, as well as business representation and networking.
