Big White ending season early to fight COVID-19 infections | iNFOnews | Thompson-Okanagan s News Source

March 31, 2021 - 1:30 PM Given increased COVID-19 cases, an uptick in interest by skiers from outside the region and the unauthorized partying at a Big White restaurant earlier this week, the resort has decided to close on Monday, April 5 rather than April 11. “We made the decision to stay open until April 11 back in June of last year,” Peter Plimmer, president and CEO of Big White Ski Resort Ltd. said in a news release. “Since then, a lot has changed. In the past week, even more has changed.” With Whistler and Blackcomb being ordered to close on Monday and other ski hills scheduled to close April 5, there’s been increased interest from Lower Mainland residents trying to book rooms and lift tickets at Big White, the release states.

Ski resort takes major financial hit from pandemic

Share to Jan 21, 2021 3:38 PM Pete McIntyre The COVID-19 health and safety orders have had a major impact on the bottom line at Big White. The ski resort said since the initial travel advisories in late November, the resort and its reservation service have cancelled $7.3-million in lift ticket and accommodation bookings. The business said it has received hundreds upon hundreds of emails, messages and comments from families and individuals disappointed by these decisions. Over and above the $7.3 million is the lost revenue for the other departments on the mountain – including the ski and board school, food & beverage, equipment rental, hard and soft good sales, retail, events and activities.
