Another 16 cases of COVID-19 confirmed at Big White Ski Resort | iNFOnews | Thompson-Okanagan s News Source

Another 16 people have tested positive for COVID-19 at Big White Ski Resort near Kelowna. That brings the cluster of cases associated with the ski hill to 76 although only 44 are people who live on the mountain. Most cases are related to group housing on the mountain and it’s safe for people to ski there, an Interior Health news release stated today, Dec. 18. “The risk remains low for families and individuals visiting Big White Mountain who follow public health guidance,” the release reads. “In other words, it is safe to go to Big White when you stick to your immediate household bubble and avoid socializing and gathering, etc.”

Sun Peaks doctor urges vigilance around testing and self-isolation in light of Big White outbreak

On Dec. 16, Big White announced it had fired employees who were in breach of a “social responsibility contract” and “health declaration” it implemented this season.   Dr. Shane Barclay of the Sun Peaks Community Health Centre said the resort community 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops will inevitably see cases this winter.  “It’s not a question of if, but when we’re going to start seeing positive cases,” Barclay said. His advice to Sun Peaks residents is to be proactive: isolate and get tested if they have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, which include fever or chills, cough and fatigue.  “We had positive tests come back with patients with rather minimal symptoms,” Barclay said. “So, my recommendation is if you’re feeling unwell, get a COVID test. Rule it out right off the get-go.”

Big White Ski Resort cancels hundreds of reservations in response to COVID-19 cluster | iNFOnews

December 18, 2020 - 2:30 PM Big White Ski Resort’s cancellation of all reservations made by people from outside the Central Okanagan was about making a statement, according to the ski hill s senior vice-president Michael J. Ballingal. But that action makes up only a small part of the financial damage done by the COVID-19 pandemic since 80 per cent of such reservations for the Christmas and new year period had already been cancelled by the skiers themselves. It also won’t stop all of those out-of-town and out-of-province skiers from going to Big White. The decision to cancel the reservations up until Jan. 8, was made by Big White s owners after a cluster of positive COVID-19 tests amongst 60 people either working at or associated with the resort. That number grew to 76 today, Dec. 18.
