Fairfax County is taking a small but crucial first step toward electrifying its sprawling government vehicle fleet, thanks to more than $4 million in state grants.
Gov. Ralph Northam announced on Friday (May 7) that the county will receive $4.4 million from the first round of Virginia’s Clean Air Communities Program, an initiative that launched in November using $20 million from the state’s Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust.
Three of the five awarded grants went to Fairfax County agencies:
Department of Transportation: $2.9 million for four shuttle buses and chargers
Department of Public Works and Environmental Services: $1.2 million for four solid waste and recycling trucks and chargers
Columbus Division of Police Central Headquarters.
City officials will interview its first group of nine candidates who have applied to be the next Columbus Police Chief.
The candidates include law enforcement officials from Detroit, Fort Myers, Dallas, Seattle and Philadelphia among others. The group also includes Perry Tarrant, who was a finalist for the post in 2019. None of the candidates selected for an interview have served within Columbus police force.
During the last search, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther looked outside the division for the first time and this time around he s signaled he s committed to hiring from outside the department.

ADB Safegate’s system allows for aircraft to be tracked and enhances safety in adverse weather conditions
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport’s new concourse has been equipped with the ADB Safegate solution delivered by airside construction specialists, AERO Bridgeworks.
The 14-gate facility – which is operated by American Airlines – opened last week (April 20) and is a key component in the hub’s ‘Project Journey’ programme.
Due to its automated system, pilots are able to park aircraft with more precision and safety even during difficult weather conditions.
