The Rhode Island House of Representatives voted 63 to 9 Tuesday night to change the name of Theodore Francis Green airport, better known as T.F. Green airport. But don’t worry: It’s not a big change. Airlines have suggested for years that including a geographic identifier to the airport’s name could help boost tourism to the state. Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy recently introduced legislation to do so, and most state representatives voted in favor of changing the airport’s name to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport. (”Rhode Island International Airport” was also in the running, but didn’t make the cut.)

The House of Representatives today passed legislation (2021-H 6051) introduced by Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy that would rename the state airport in Warwick “Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport.” “The goal of the legislation is to promote better consumer awareness of the airport’s location, along with increasing the level of passenger travel from the facility,” said Representative Kennedy. “The name change will assist in marketing the state of Rhode Island to both leisure and business travelers. Currently, it’s one of only 32 airports in the country that do not have a city, state or region in the name. It’s important that we do what we can to encourage our tourism economy and bring the airport back to its pre-COVID-19 success.”

PROVIDENCE, RI Two bills aimed at cutting down on plastic usage in Rhode Island were approved by the state Senate Tuesday. The first would cut down on plastic straw usage in restaurants, while the second would create a statewide single-use plastic bag ban. The sponsors of both bills cited concerns about single-use plastics ending up in the state s waterways, creating pollution and posing a hazard to wildlife.

Rep. Michelle E. McGaw (D-Dist. 71, Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton) has introduced legislation ( 2021-H 6274) that would extend the period of time that a newly purchased motor vehicle may be temporarily operated from 20 to 30 days, using the purchaser’s current license plates. Cars bought in the private market, which are currently given only two business days to transfer the plate, would have 30 days for the transfer under the legislation. R.I.
