Poll: Most California voters want to revamp state s recall process

SAN FRANCISCO As Gov. Gavin Newsom faces a September recall election, a majority of California likely voters would support overhauling the state s recall process to make it harder to remove elected officials mid-term, according to a Public Policy Institute of California poll released Wednesday. Sixty percent of likely voters said they would favor changing the state s rules so officials can only be recalled because of illegal or unethical activity. Fifty-five percent would support doubling the number of signatures that are required to hold a recall election. While the PPIC poll didn t ask about voters views on whether to recall Newsom, another poll this week by Berkeley s Institute of Governmental Studies found him with 50 percent support to 47 percent among likely voters.

These jumps were driven by gun homicides, and guns played an increasing role in robberies and aggravated assaults. Homicides climbed around California and the nation in 2020. Focusing on the year of the assault causing the death rather than the year it was reported to the FBI Uniform Crime Report statewide data shows that homicides jumped from 1,658 in 2019 to 2,161 in 2020. This is the biggest annual increase since reliable statewide record-keeping for crime started in 1960, an increase of 30.3%.

Consumer Report Claims Insurers Overcharged California Motorists $5 5B During First Year of Pandemic

Consumer Report Claims Insurers Overcharged California Motorists $5.5B During First Year of Pandemic June 29, 2021 The report shows auto insurers reaped “a windfall of about $5.5 billion.” Insurance companies’ average return on net worth was more than twice what California law allows last year, according to the report. Since April 2020, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has issued four bulletins directing insurers to refund overcharges, and in March he set an April 30 deadline for companies to repay outstanding 2020 refunds. Lara in March said insurers continued to overcharge drivers despite reduced risk of accidents during the pandemic. Insurance companies were allowed to calculate for themselves what they owe. As a result, the top 15 auto insurance companies, representing 70% of the market, have only repaid roughly $1.9 billion for 2020, less than half of what they overcharged California consumers, the report shows.
