A Franklin Lakes man charged with setting fire to Most Blessed Sacrament Church in December 2019 was found not guilty by reason of insanity on Monday.
During the 2-1/2-hour hearing before Judge Robert Vinci, psychiatrist Steven Simring characterized James Mayers as religiously preoccupied and said he was hoping to reach religious purity by setting fire to the church without expecting its complete destruction.
After the hearing in Superior Court in Bergen County, Mayers, 27, was ordered committed to Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains for what remains of an estimated 30-year sentence on combined charges of first-degree aggravated arson and third-degree burglary. He will remain under court supervision until December 2049.

N.J. man charged with surfing ‘Dark Web’ to collect nearly 3K images of child porn, prosecutor says
Updated Dec 22, 2020;
A Bergen County man was arrested Monday after investigators said a search of his home revealed nearly 3,000 images of child pornography.
John Bianchini, 65, of Ridgefield Park, is charged with second-degree possession of child pornography and fourth-degree possession of marijuana, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutor Mark Musella said members of the county’s Cyber Crimes Task Force executed a search warrant at Bianchini’s home as part of an investigation into Internet child pornography.
“The investigation revealed that Bianchini used the Internet, including the ‘Dark Web’, to view, download, or possess approximately 2,908 digital files depicting nude and/or sexually explicit prepubescent children,” Musella said in a statement.
