A former federal Labor candidate is suing his old party and seeking potentially hundreds of thousands in damages over claims he was unfairly booted from the Cowan preselection race ahead of the 2016 election.
West Australian lawyer Tristan Cockman ran unsuccessfully for Labor in the seat of Cowan in 2013 and lodged an expression of interest to run in the same seat ahead of the 2016 election.

Labor MP Patrick Gorman has dismissed suggestions from former prime minister Kevin Rudd to adopt a super profits tax on big mining companies and said Australia shouldn’t look at “old ideas in the face of new challenges”.
Mr Rudd has called for the introduction of the controversial policy proposal which played a key role in him losing his leadership of the Labor Party in 2010.
Federal Labor MP for Perth Patrick Gorman said the ALP is “not going back to a mining tax”.
“It’s not something that’s going to happen under an Albanese Labor government,” he told Sky News.
