UPS Driver Delivers Help to Those in Need in Louisiana

May 4, 2021 4:00 PM, EDT UPS Driver Delivers Help to Those in Need in Louisiana James Joseph and UPS helpers pose with Desi Kent after Joseph s Big Brown organization performed home improvements for Kent. (UPS via YouTube) UPS driver James Joseph’s philosophy sounds a lot like a slogan his company once had: What can “Big Brown” do for you? In the case of the philanthropy Joseph created, the answer seems to be “whatever it takes.” When he’s not delivering packages, Joseph has helped deliver air conditioners and fans to people during sweltering weather, water and supplies to hurricane-stricken areas and, most recently, masks and hand sanitizer to schools across Louisiana.

Cascadia tsunami would flood Navy piers, Kitsap highways, state says

BANGOR  A powerful and incessant tsunami generated by the next Cascadia megaquake would crest Navy piers and wharves, flood critical state highways in Kitsap County and inundate other lowland areas of Puget Sound, according to new modeling released Tuesday by the state s Department of Natural Resources.  In Hood Canal, the 9.0 quake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone off Washington s coast would slosh water back and forth like in a bathtub, topping the Navy s submarine piers and pushing waves as high as 14 feet onto the shore at Belfair. In Sinclair Inlet, the waves would be smaller, the state says, but would still inundate the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard with about a foot of water and likely push more than 3 1/2 feet of water through Gorst, closing the highway. Other lowland areas of Puget Sound, particularly near the mouths of streams including Clear Creek in Silverdale and within Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island, would flood as well.

ICYMI, Washington Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler won: This year Kreidler requested a bill from the Legislature that would stop insurers from engaging in the racist practice of using credit scores to set certain insurance rates, which ends up forcing poor people to pay more for car insurance than middle-class and wealthy people with worse records. Sen. Mark Mullet worked with insurance lobbyists to gut the bill. Kreidler called for it to die. It died. After that, he used his emergency powers to issue a rule banning the practice for three years. The insurance companies sued, claiming he tried to do an end-around the state Legislature. Last Friday, a Thurston County Superior Court approved Kreidler s move. Today the Commissioner issued a May 6 deadline for property and casualty insurers to file their plans to meet the rule requirement, which should help protect those who are the most hurt financially by the pandemic from being forced to pay even higher premiums, he said.
