We re going to improve : Southwest Elementary focuses on student growth to beat state ratings, perceptions | Region

BELTON — Vanessa Reyes wasn’t shocked when she learned her son’s school, Southwest Elementary, received a D on the state of Texas school accountability report in 2019. It made sense to her. The South Belton school, she said, lacked some basic things — such as an air-conditioned gym and additional resources for teachers and students. But Reyes knew it didn’t have the most important aspect: Parent involvement. That was something she saw at other schools, such as Sparta Elementary, where her nephew attends. “As parents, we have to be part of our kids’ school,” Reyes, a 2009 graduate of Belton High School, said. “We have to be involved in our kids’ learning — it’s part of being a parent.”

Paying it forward: Act of kindness leads to others as bus driver helps family

BELTON — Karen Hopson wanted to make one of her student’s lives easier. Hopson, a bus driver for the Belton Independent School District, noticed an old truck parked in front of a student’s home. “I started visiting with the mom and I said, ‘You know, if you wouldn’t mind, would you move the truck around the corner so it would be easier to get my student, and I can pick her up right at the sidewalk, and she could go ahead and help grandma get in the house easier?’” Hopson said. The mom informed her the truck couldn’t be moved. It had been broken down for quite some time.

Bell adds 3 COVID-19 deaths; total reaches 144

The Bell County Public Health District identified three COVID-19 related fatalities on Thursday, bringing the death toll to 144. “Those were for three women: one from Temple in her 60s, one from Harker Heights in her 80s and another from Killeen in her 80s,” Health District Director Amanda Robison-Chadwell said. “Our thoughts go out to their loved ones in this difficult time.” Residents aged 60 years and older now represent about 92 percent of all COVID-19-related deaths in Bell County, according to the health district. Prior to Thursday’s update, comorbidities — deaths where one or more medical conditions co-occur with a primary health complication — were present for about 67.5 percent of this age group.
