She said a little boy named Ryan had âtugged at her heart strings.â
âThat summer, not only did I help Ryan, but he helped me realize what I wanted to do with my life,â Norwood said. âI am so very grateful that I chose to follow that path.â  Â
On Thursday, Norwood â who has served 17 of her 20 years as an educator with the Belton Independent School District â was recognized as the Belton ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Her Sparta Elementary students surprised her with the recognition.
âI am honored to be recognized by my peers for what I do each day,â she said. âBeing a teacher is not just a job to me, it is part of who I am. I want to see my students succeed no matter how big or small their success is.â
Temple Independent School District trustees Dan Posey, Ronnie Gaines and Sandhya Sanghi will continue to represent their single-member districts after each was sworn in for another three-year term on Monday.
The district canceled its May 1 trustee election for the District 3, District 4 and District 5 seats during its regular board meeting on March 8 â after no one filed to run against the trio.
Posey â reelected by trustees Monday as board president â will begin his fourth full term as a trustee. He was first appointed to the board in 2011 to serve an unexpired term, and was elected to his first three-year term in 2012.
âIt is a great honor to continue to be on the Temple ISD school board,â Posey, who serves the northwestern parts of Temple ISD in District 3, said. âI have enjoyed it immensely and I appreciate the voters of Temple allowing me to continue my service. I look forward to working hard for our students, teachers, staff and our community.â
A High Point Elementary student was reportedly bitten by a rattlesnake Tuesday afternoon on campus, a Temple fire spokesman said.
The student was taken to a hospital emergency room after the snake bite was reported at Tuesday at the campus, 1635 Starlight Dr., Temple & Fire spokesman Santos Soto told the Telegram.
âThe student was taken to the ER with a superficial wound,â Soto said.
High Point Elementary â west of State Highway 317 in the northern part of the Belton Independent School District â opened its doors in the 2013-14 school year and has dealt with snakes periodically as home construction continues in the West Temple area.
Belton schools trustee Chris Flor was reelected to his Area 4 seat on Saturday, according to unofficial election results provided by the district.
Flor beat challenger Brent Coates, an energy consultant for Amos Electric Supply, with about 55 percent of the votes. Coates, a political newcomer, received about 45 percent of the vote.
The Belton Independent School District board will canvass the results of the election at a special meeting on May 10, the district said.
Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
A $124.9 million bond proposal to expand and update Temple College facilities will be decided by local residents.
The proposal, if approved, would call for a major expansion of the schoolâs Health Sciences Center to address a shortage of health care workers as well as providing updates to several college buildings that are 50 to 60 years old.
âIf approved, the new facilities could be completed by 2026 when Temple College will be celebrating its 100th anniversary,â TC President Christy Ponce said. âThese campus advancements would represent an important milestone in Temple Collegeâs history of being trusted for generations and building for the future.â
