As we celebrate the month of May as part of the 142nd Wing, we observe Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. For some, this month comes and goes without a clear understanding of what or why we are celebrating, so I wanted to dig in to bring more light,
GAPA was founded in 1988 by a group of gay and bi Asian and Pacific Islander men who had been meeting as a rap group at the Pacific Center for Human Growth in Berkeley. At the time, the founders saw a need to build community with other queer APIs, shape a positive sense of queer API identity, and mobilize the community to increase our political power in a time darkened by the AIDS epidemic.
Now, over 33 years later, GAPA meets a national moment of racial reckoning, at an unprecedented time of awareness of the violence perpetrated against Asian Americans, by changing our name to GLBTQ+ Asian Pacific Alliance. This new name more fully reflects who we hold ourselves accountable to: the entire GLBTQ+ Asian and Pacific Islander community.

How Asian American and Pacific Island Researchers Are Contributing to the Future of Science
People of Asian and Pacific Islander descent number about 24.2 million in the United States today. They make up 13% of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce, and many play critical roles in global research. Even so, ongoing analyses, including a recent report by the Pew Research Center, show that progress is still needed to achieve gender, racial, and ethnic diversity within STEM fields.
In recognition of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, celebrated throughout May, members of the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences and Pew-Stewart Scholars Program for Cancer Research recently talked about their latest investigations and how to promote diversity within STEM. They are among the promising leaders playing an important role in shaping the future of the scientific community.
