What we can learn from the 6.8 Nisqually earthquake 20 years later By Brian Flores 20 years after the 6.8 Nisqually quake In 2001, a powerful earthquake hit the Nisqually area, injuring hundreds and causing billions of dollars of damage. NISQUALLY, Wash. - On Feb. 28, 2001, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nisqually, injuring hundreds of people and causing billions of dollars in damage. Now, 20 years later, how has Washington changed in response to the Nisqually quake? Understanding that the earth is actually in motion and that there is plate tectonics going on is what first hooked me in, University of Washington professor Harold Tobin said in 2019. Nisqually earthquake 20 years later; are we prepared for the next big one? Siemny Kim It’s been 20 years since the Nisqually earthquake shook the region. It was one of the biggest earthquakes to rattle the area in decades. Small Quake Shakes Off Oregon Coast This Weekend As Another Rattles Alaska Published 02/28/21 at 5:20 PM PDT By Oregon Coast Beach Connection staff (Bandon, Oregon) – A small earthquake shook off the southern Oregon coast early Saturday morning, clocking in at a minor 4.0 in magnitude. Meanwhile, a larger quake rattled parts of southern Alaska a bit later in the day, reminding some Oregonians of the quake there that caused a tsunami here in the 60s. Other recent tremblors are in yellow) The undersea quake took place about 250 miles off the south coast, this time in more of a straight line westward from Dunes City instead of the usual Coos Bay or Reedsport. At a magnitude 4.0 it was not strong enough to generate a tsunami; it takes at least a 7.0 to do that. The quake shook at 5:33 a.m. Saturday at a depth of about six miles.
