A coalition is moving forward with a campaign to recall Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley even though she has decided not to seek re-election.
O’Malley announced on May 18 that she will not seek a fourth term in 2023.
The Justice 4 Oscar Grant Coalition is moving ahead with the recall campaign following O’ Malley’s decision not to prosecute BART police Officer Anthony Pirone for his part in the shooting death of Oscar Grant III. Grant died after BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle shot him early on New Year’s Day 2009 at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland.
Women’s Cancer Resource Center Celebrates 35th Anniversary
Founded in 1986, WCRC’s mission has been to improve the quality of life for women with cancer and advance equity in cancer support, especially for low-income persons, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Nearly 80% of WCRC’s clients live below the federal poverty level, and 70% of them identify as people of color.

A conservation group has called on federal authorities to set speed limits on ships off the California coast to prevent threatened and endangered whales from dying in collisions.
The petition from the Center for Biological Diversity asks the National Marine Fisheries Service to consider making the voluntary 10-knot speed limit (11-12 mph) a mandatory rule in whale feeding grounds. Lower speeds give whales a better chance of surviving collisions, if not avoiding them. Endangered blue, humpback, and fin whales off California’s coast are too frequently struck and killed by ships, said the petition filed last week by Catherine Kilduff, a senior attorney with the center.
