Hong Kong’s artistic freedoms were being tightened in Beijing
When pro-Hong Kong Chinese characters began to wonder what kind of art should be allowed in the city’s new M + Visual Culture Museum, it revealed a growing rift between artistic freedoms and territorial state censorship.
These tensions, which arose after the city imposed a tough national security law last year, will be further tested when one of the world’s largest art fairs returns to Hong Kong on Friday. More than ever, the territory’s former free cultural community is being covered in Beijing, critics say.

Art Basel has announced the first edition of Art Basel Live, a virtual event to run parallel with the Hong Kong fair in May 2021. Art Basel Live presents a multifaceted digital experience ranging from online viewing rooms to virtual tours, events and walkthroughs streamed across a plethora of platforms including the Art Basel website, YouTube and Facebook. With 104 participating galleries from 23 countries around the world, this year’s physical fair takes place in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and will feature 56 satellite booths presenting digitised artworks for sale.

Art Basel has officially confirmed 104 galleries from across the world to participate in the 2021 return of Art Basel Hong Kong.
This year, Art Basel Hong Kong will be partaking in a hybrid format that brings together Basel’s digital and physical platforms for the 2021 edition. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, only 56 galleries have committed to in-person booths at the fair. These galleries have opted for Art Basel’s satellite booth approach where each will be staffed by a representative appointed by Basel themselves.
Other galleries such as Hong Kong-based Rossi & Rossi and Manila-based Silverlens have come together for collective booths. In another special instance, eight leading Italian galleries including, Alfonso Artiaco, Cardi Gallery, Galleria Continua, Galleria Franco Noero, Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M., Mazzoleni, Massimo De Carlo and Rossi & Ross have joined forces to showcase at one booth. This May, Art Basel Hong Kong is scheduled to return to an in-person fair for the first time since the pandemic began. Galleries from across the world have officially been confirmed to participate in the 2021 showcase, but not all of them will actually make a physical appearance.
After it was canceled last year due to the coronavirus, one of the starkest differences between the pre-pandemic iterations and the 2021 return is the number of participating galleries. Art Basel Hong Kong is down from 242 in 2019 to 104 this year – a decrease of more than half.
