LETTER: Talking newspaper seeks new home to continue vital service

By Letters to the Editor Send us your views on the week s news The Winchester Talking Newspaper studio in Twyford SIR: Winchester Talking Newspaper (WTN) provides free sound recordings of the Hampshire Chronicle to our 80 or so visually impaired listeners. Our service is a valuable lifeline for them. We have an urgent problem, which I hope someone amongst the readers of your newspaper can help us solve. We currently operate from premises in Twyford. The owners of the building in which we are a tenant are Humphrey Farms, who will be redeveloping the site, so we need to vacate our studio by the end of August. Humphrey Farms have been excellent and generous landlords, charging us only a token amount for an annual lease. We thank them enormously.

Talking newspaper keeps communities connected to local news during COVID- 19

These recordings are created thanks to volunteer readers, editors and recording engineers. Once ready, the monthly recording is available to play on the Talking Newspaper for Todmorden website but also sent out directly on a USB stick to over 30 local residents. When the first lockdown was announced in March 2020, the organisation held a meeting to discuss next steps as the team recording sessions would have to be put on hold indefinitely. Paul Suthers, the Chair of the Talking Newspaper for Todmorden said: “Our recording room was closed due to lockdown, so when it was announced, we had a zoom to discuss going forward.
