Cathy Amenta

Cathy Jean Amenta (née Cox) of Salida passed peacefully at home May 17. She fought a very long and valiant battle against Ovarian cancer. Her ever cheerful strength and courage were inspiring gifts that she gave selflessly to her friends and family. Cathy was a very well-loved and respected member of the Salida community. She owned and operated Amenta Massage and Bodyworks in downtown Salida and later she devoted her time and talents to the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center where she gave therapeutic massage to the oncology patients receiving treatment there. Cathy was born Feb. 4, 1967, in Englewood and was raised in Littleton. After the family moved to Bailey, she graduated from Platte Canyon High School where she excelled in track and field and won the state championship for the 100-meter hurdle.

Ark-Valley Humane society hosts fundraiser

Ark-Valley Humane Society is hosting the Fourth Annual Tails on the Trail – A 5k walk/run for the animals. Due to the pandemic, this year’s event will be virtual.  “Tails on the Trail is a great way for our community to come together while supporting the life-saving work of Ark-Valley Humane Society. We’re excited to offer more virtual events on our Facebook Live this year,” outreach manager Emy Luebbering said.  Register for Tails on the Trail at ark-valley.org anytime now until May 16.  This year’s virtual event will take place on Ark-Valley’s Facebook page as a Facebook live event. Log on to www.facebook.com/ArkValleyHumaneSociety to tune in.

Chaffee’s Got Heart Committee recognized Amber van Leuken, Executive Director for Ark-Valley Humane Society.  “Prior to COVID-19 we were shelter based,” van Leuken said. “Before the stay-at-home order, the majority of animals came into our shelters and stayed there until they were adopted or reclaimed  by their owners.”   Once stay-at-home came into effect, the shelter shifted to a foster-based model of care which is not the standard of care the majority of animals in the shelter’s care.  Ark-Valley also shifted to virtual services.  “We first scrambled to get all  our forms and service information available through our website and made it possible  for people to pay through our website for our services,” van  Leuken said.
