For most people, a car is the second-largest purchase they make after housing, so statisticians throwing into the mix the price of battery electric vehicles and hybrids shows that even the beancounters have realised their relevance.
“Electric cars have crossed a critical threshold and gone mainstream,” says Jamie Hamilton at Deloitte. “Everyone knows someone who has one.”
The numbers back up his argument. Last year, the wider market for new car sales fell by almost 30pc, with just over 1.6m new cars registered – the lowest level since 1992.
