Pike County Jailer Brian Morris said the inmate garden project is underway.
âWeâre happy that this year we can operate the garden,â Morris said. âWe had to suspend the program last year due to COVID-19.
âWe started the garden program in 2019 and it was very successful both in the food grown and inmate participation,â Morris said. âThe inmates learn a lot while getting the feeling of accomplishment when the harvest comes in and the vegetables are on their plates.â
Morris said that, this year, the garden space is courtesy of Lexington Coal Group with a location in the Belfry area.
Brandon Hatfield
Two Pike County men were charged with trafficking in methamphetamine after a traffic stop on U.S. 23 last week.
According to court documents, on April 8, Kentucky State Police Trooper Christopher Tyree was on routine patrol in the Dorton area when he observed a 2002 GMC Yukon with expired registration plates.
Court documents said that Tyree noted upon making the stop that the driver, Brandon Hatfield, 32, of Pike Street, Elkhorn City, was âsweating profusely and very fidgety.â Hatfield, according to an arrest citation, was unable to successfully complete field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for DUI.
During a search subsequent to the arrest, Tyree wrote, he located an estimated 12 grams of methamphetamine in the vehicleâs glove box, and located a set of digital scales in the passenger side door. In addition, Tyree wrote, he found five plastic bags commonly used to package drugs for sale along with the suspected methamphetamine.

The Pike County Detention Center has started a new program for inmates to build and donate beds and mattresses to people in need in the community, including local students.
Pike County Jailer Brian Morris said that the jail began making its own mats within the jail about three years ago in order to save money, and he decided to expand that idea to have inmates build beds and mattresses in this new workshop program. The program started about two months ago, and they have already made 50 beds to donate to people in need. About eight to 10 inmates are currently participating in the program.
Joseph D. Hopkins
A Pike man was arrested on several charges including trafficking in methamphetamine after Kentucky State Police said a trooper conducted a traffic stop on his ATV.
According to an arrest citation by KSP Trooper Christopher Tyree, on April 6, he observed an ATV operated by Joseph Dewayne Hopkins, 37, of Greasy Creek Road, Shelbiana, cross multiple lanes of traffic.
Tyree wrote that upon making contact with Hopkins, he found that Hopkins was visibly impaired, with âglazed-over eyes and visible white residue around (his) nostrils.â
Hopkins, the citation said, was initially compliant and voluntarily stepped off the ATV, but became non-compliant during a safety pat-down Tyree was conducting. Tyree wrote that Hopkins got back onto the ATV and refused commands for several minutes until he again got off the ATV and was placed into handcuffs.
