The Daily Tribune – www.newsofbahrain.com Parliamentarians are to vote on a draft law amending the Unemployment Insurance Law to pay 50 per cent of the wages of insured Bahraini workers impacted by the pandemic, starting October 2020. The payment will benefit companies most affected by the repercussion of COVID-19 pandemic. The move is as per the Social Insurance Law promulgated by Decree-Law No. (24) of 1976. Three months’ wages will be paid to workers, starting in October 2020, said the Ministry of Labour and Social Development. The Public Authority for Social Insurance said the unemployment insurance account surplus amounted to BD488,376,881 until September 2020. The amount to be disbursed reaches BD6,553,576 in October, BD6,439,050 in November, and BD6,422,934 in December. The authority said it paid unemployment insurance to 569,479 beneficiaries in 2020.

Oman increases cost of expatriate hires

DUBAI: Oman’s Ministry of Labor released new fee structure for employers with increased fees for expatriate hires, daily Times of Oman reported. Hiring non-nationals under the new structure will cost nearly $5,198 for top positions, $2,600 for mid-levels, and $1,561 for technical and skilled workers. The decision was made to increase Omanization, the nationalization program of various jobs in the Sultanate. Some industries will have a specified fee for each expatriate hiree. Hiring an expatriate fisherman will cost companies almost $938, while for other industries the fee will increase with the number of foreign employees in each position. Companies will also have to pay additional fees for job switching and updating a hiree’s employment status.

Hiring an expatriate in a top position under the new structure will cost companies OMR2,001, while the cost of the licence fee for a non-Omani hired in a mid-level position is OMR1,001. Taking on board any expatriate working in a technical, skilled or specialised position will cost companies OMR601 per expatriate employee. Revised expat hiring fees have also been rolled out for sectors such as animal husbandry, fisheries and agriculture.

Muscat: Hard-hit private sector firms, under the current circumstances, can cut down the salaries of their employees for a period of three months in return for reducing their working hours (after the expiration of an employee’s stock of paid holidays). This procedure shall take effect, if necessary, till 31 March 2021. Expatriate workers leaving Oman for good will continue to have their labour-related fines waived, provided they leave the country permanently, the Ministry of Labour has announced.
