GERRY BROOME/AP The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention s recent decision clearing the way for 12-15-year-olds to get vaccinated for COVID-19 has helped boost interest in the shot in Forsyth County.  Vaccine supply still far exceeds demand in the county – that’s why the health department decided to shut down its mass vaccination site. But Public Health Director Joshua Swift says he’s encouraged by the numbers he saw at events last week, with teens making up about two-thirds of the attendees.

DAVID ZALUBOWSKI/AP Forsyth County, Novant Health, and Wake Forest Baptist Health are all pausing the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine after rare blood clots were reported in six patients. Forsyth County s top public health official says the news has already increased vaccine hesitancy.  About 1,600 appointments at the county’s most recent weekend mass vaccination event were canceled. That’s a no-show rate of about 25%. Public Health Director Joshua Swift says that’s more than double the rate they saw at their last event.

It s the next step in the vaccine phases and some districts like Davie County aren t wasting any time immunizing staff. The district says it will start next week on January 27. Winston-Salem/Forsyth and Rockingham County Schools also are strategizing on how to vaccinate staff. Other districts, like Guilford County Schools, are waiting for more information. Counties will likely move at different paces.

Official Says Forsyth County Is Past A Holiday Bump in COVID-19 Cases

Forsyth County’s top public health official is expressing cautious optimism about recent COVID-19 trends in the county.  At a press conference Tuesday, Public Health Director Joshua Swift noted that case numbers have declined slightly. He said in the past 14 days, the county averaged 251 new cases per day. But in the last 7 days, the daily average dropped to 222.
