COVID-19 herd immunity target to be reached on 19 May The 70% mark set by the Maltese authorities will be reached next week 12 May 2021, 7:00am by Kurt Sansone Herd immunity for COVID-19 will be reached today week if the vaccination rollout of first doses maintains the current pace.  With 61% of the adult population aged 18 and over having received at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine last Monday, the 70% mark set by the Maltese authorities will be reached on 19 May.  On the same day, Malta can expect to have a third of its adult population fully-inoculated with two doses, or the single shot Janssen vaccine.

Public health association says country risks blacklisting if COVID cases are not curbed The Malta Association of Public Health Medicine welcomes new measures, says they must be complimented by effective enforcement   7 March 2021, 10:12am by Karl Azzopardi The Malta Association of Public Health Medicine has welcomed the introduction of new restrictive measures, but has insisted on better enforcement.  “it is imperative that such measures are complemented by effective enforcement, in a bid to improve on the evident societal complacency,” a statement read.   The association said that at this phase during the pandemic, where the vaccine roll out is still at its early stages, and spread of the virus is really high, a final effort is needed to curb infections.

Abela said the reform will not weaken the industry but rather increases its sustainability. “We have to accept that we need to raise standards, and walk away from old practices,” he said. The Labour leader said that while developers must be understood and incentivised, government’s priority must be that of protecting the safety of people in their households.   Such a priority, he said is shown in the proposals being forwarded, such as the right to employ an architect if a development is being carried out on neighbouring plots. The expenses would be forked out by the developers themselves. He also said the new authority will be tasked with handling people’s complaints.
