AS a member of the public who spoke at the City of York Council meeting calling for the resignation of the council leader, I am shocked and dismayed to discover that not one single Green or Lib Dem councillor had the courage or honesty to support the vote of no confidence. This whole sorry saga is not a party political issue. It is about whether our elected representatives conduct themselves in accordance with the Nolan Principles referring particularly to truth, openness and integrity. I don’t know Councillor Aspden and I don’t know whether he is a bully or not but the Public Interest Report is quite clear that the actions taken around the departure of Mary Weastell were inappropriate and potentially illegal. Now it is out in the public domain at last. Just as serious is the misuse of taxpayers’ money that the auditors, Mazers, have made known - to the tune of nearly £118,000 being paid that didn’t have to be. Without their issuing a Public Interest Report to make all this open to the public’s attention you can be sure it would have all been kept secret, a
Ian Floyd, City of York Council chief operating officer, and Mary Weastell, former chief executive THE Public Interest Report issued to City of York Council this week is the local authority’s second in five years. The reports are relatively rare for upper tier councils – since 2016 only four have been issued, to Nottingham City Council, London Borough of Croydon, Northampton Borough Council and this week City of York Council. Auditors scrutinising councils’ yearly accounts publish Public Interest Reports when they find “a significant matter” that they want to bring to the attention of the public and council. In 2016 York received a Public Interest Report over the way top council officers were paid thousands of pounds extra to run the authority’s trading company, City of York Trading.
