Cape Town - Power utility Eskom is in the process of quantifying losses incurred in the R841 million accommodation building for workers at the Kusile power station.
This was revealed by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan in his written response to parliamentary questions by DA MP Benedicta van Minnen.
The incomplete project, known as Wilge Residential Development Project, was initially costed at R260m but it ballooned to more than R800m when it was halted in 2019.
“Eskom is in the process of quantifying the losses incurred and the parties against whom legal actions should be taken. Counsel has been engaged to advise on the merits of intended action,” Gordhan said.

Pretoria - The number of retrenchment notices in South Africa is overwhelming as some employers are seemingly taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to cut jobs. National Union of of South Africa (Numsa) president Andrew Chirwa said employers were maximising profits without seeing that they were inhibiting the buying power of the nation.
Chirwa made these remarks on Friday at the unionâs Engineering National Bargaining Conference at the Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni.
âThe crisis in South Africa was compounded by the lack of leadership and corruption,â Chirwa said.
MOGOENG LEAVE: WHY NOW, CHIEF? Letter Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng. Credit: News24
My friend and I tried to make sense of why Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng could take leave when the Constitutional Court has to deliver on one of the most important decisions in our democracy.
The court has a serious decision to make after former president Jacob Zuma defied its order to appear before the Zondo Commission.
On the other hand, Mogoeng insinuated during the JSC interviews that Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan might have tried to capture the judiciary through his friend, Judge Dhaya Pillay.
This brought to mind what has been said in the corridors of politics that once you dare challenge Gordhan, who is regarded as a de facto president or prime minister by some among his adversaries, it is the end of you.
Mkhwebane: I am not involved in ANC factional battles

Limpopo: Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has defended herself from accusations that she took sides in the ANCâs factional battles.
Addressing a general meeting of the Black Lawyers Association in Limpopo on Saturday, Mkhwebane said she had made adverse findings across the purported factional divide where evidence of wrongdoing existed.
âWe are unfairly criticised of being in cahoots with so-called factions of the governing party. It is not within our personal knowledge as to which ANC politician belongs to which faction or whether those factions do exist,â she said.
No more bailouts for SAA

There will be no more bailouts for SAA, so a soon-to-be-announced strategic equity partner will help the state airline get back its wings.
The spokesperson for the department of public enterprises, Richard Mantu, would not be drawn on details of the partner, which will provide the restructured airline with much-needed capital, but reiterated that an announcement will be made within weeks.
He noted that the government had indicated there would be no further funding for SAA, “hence the reason for engaging with strategic equity partners to provide further funding for the operations of the new airline”.
