Share Share Responding to reports that President Biden will maintain the 15,000 person refugee cap, the lowest refugee numbers established during the 2020 presidential determination under Donald Trump, Joanne Lin, the National Director of Advocacy and Government Relations said: “Today, President Biden is turning his back on tens of thousands of refugees around the world who have been approved to come to the United States. Communities across the United States, from local groups to faith-based institutions, are ready to welcome these refugees. As a presidential candidate, Joe Biden pledged to welcome 125,000 refugees during his first year in office. In February, Secretary Blinken notified Congress that the Biden administration planned to admit up to 62,500 refugees this fiscal year. Two months later, that number has been slashed.

To wake up to this tragedy while closing the night with video circulating of a police-involved shooting of a 13-year-old here in Chicago. Our elected leaders cannot continue burying their heads in the sand.

The Democratic chairman of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee has said he and other legislators are concerned about the administration of President Joe Biden’s decision to go ahead with a weapons sale to the United Arab Emirates and would review the transactions. The Biden administration has told Congress it was proceeding with more than $23bn in weapons sales to the UAE, including advanced F-35 aircraft, armed drones and other equipment. Rights groups have condemned the sale, saying it would further stoke violence in Yemen, where the UAE is part of a Saudi Arabia-led coalition in fighting that has lead to the deaths of thousands of civilians and what the UN has called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
