Although the pandemic is exacerbating the exit of women from the workforce, Minnesota is still faring better than other states.
Nearly 600,000 women have applied for unemployment insurance in Minnesota over the past year a figure that’s disproportionately impacting women of color. Women from Minnesota’s business community, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, and Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Steve Grove gathered to discuss the problem and solutions during a virtual round table Tuesday.
“We were thrilled to see just yesterday that WalletHub once again named Minnesota the top state in the country, based on a whole host of metrics as it relates to labor force participation and economic viability and health care and lifestyle,” Grove said. “But at the same time, we know that we have a long [way] to go to make this the state where there’s true equality for women in our economy.”

ACROSS MINNESOTA Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed a new executive order Friday, further loosening some of the state s COVID-19 restrictions on public establishments and social gatherings.
The governor cited a decrease in hospitalizations and in the COVID-19 positivity rate as well as the progress made in vaccinating the most vulnerable as reasons for lifting some of the current COVID-19 restrictions. Our small businesses have made enormous sacrifices for the health of their employees and communities, Walz said in a news release. Today, we can make these cautious, common sense adjustments to support them because of the progress we have made controlling the spread of COVID-19 and getting the most at-risk Minnesotans vaccinated.
