Not even Deb Scholten is immune to the political speculation swirling around potential 2022 candidates like her son J.D.
“Dad thinks you are going to run for Senate. Are you?” she texted him recently, getting right to the point.
J.D. Scholten, a Democrat who lost to Republican Randy Feenstra in the 2020 4th District congressional race, tweeted a screenshot of the text with a facepalm emoji.
It s not that he s not thinking about it. It s just that he s trying to keep his options wide open and he s not yet sure whether he even wants to run. Among the paths he s considering are a possible run for the U.S. Senate, for Congress, for governor or even for lieutenant governor as someone else’s running mate.

There’s now a mobile app for the College Savings Iowa program.

The congressional committee tasked with adjudicating Iowa’s still-unsettled 2nd District election is giving both campaigns until March 29 to file written responses to a series of questions intended to govern its next steps.
Committee Chair U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., postponed a vote on Miller-Meeks’ motion to dismiss Hart s election challenge last week. And she has directed lawyers representing each campaign to answer written questions laying out their cases before the end of the month.
“Both parties views will help inform how this committee can best render its quote independent final judgment unquote about which candidate won the election and is entitled to this House seat,” Lofgren said during the committee meeting.

State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald announces the College Savings Iowa 529 Plan state tax deduction has increased for 2021. “Iowa taxpayers who are College Savings Iowa account owners can now deduct the first $3,474 they contribute per beneficiary account from their state taxable income in 2021,” Fitzgerald said. “This could mean a deduction of up to $13,896 for a family of four when both parents have accounts for each of their children! It’s an ideal scenario for those who want to keep more money in their pocket while saving for future education.”
