With some 4000 entries, 200 volunteers and
thousands of spectators, the 40th ASB Christchurch Marathon
will once again be one of the South Island’s most
colourful community occasions bringing together runners and
walkers from all walks of life.
On Sunday,
for the first time in more than a decade, the annual ASB
Christchurch Marathon returns to the same course and venue
as was used prior to the earthquakes. Race Director Chris
Cox says the positive weather forecast should see more than
4000 participants on the start line.
While the event
will also double as the New Zealand Marathon Championship,

The accomplishments of Sophia Dent and fellow recipient Michaela Mitchell are so closely linked that the first part of both pages are the same, followed by additional contributions of each recipient. Sophia and Michaela served as president and vice president of Miami’s Engineers Without Borders (EWB) organization over the past year. Prior to COVID, EWB members were involved in planning and coordinating multiple simultaneous projects in different locations. All of my favourite engineers have either abandoned the profession or are dedicating their lives to changing it for the better. The most heroic engineer I know never built a bridge or patented a gizmo. He completed a stint in consulting, moved on to Engineers Without Borders, then founded an organization dedicated to promoting technological stewardship in the engineering community.
What all these engineers have in common, besides collaborating with me on a nationwide grant proposal to transform engineering education, is disenchantment. They are disillusioned not only by an ethically suspect tech industry, but also by the education system that feeds this machine.
