Edith Garland Dupré library recieves grant to host discussions about voter fraud

On March 10, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Edith Garland Dupré Library will be hosting “Who Gets to Vote? Conversations on Voting Rights in America,” a four-day virtual community book reading. The event will take place via Zoom and will last from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. every week. “The purpose of this series is to prompt a discussion of voting in America and address some questions like, how has voting been historically in America, who s voted, who hasn t voted?” said Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Political Science Professor Pearson Cross, Ph.D., one of the two facilitators for the event.

Senators Cassidy and Kennedy among a group of Republican Senators looking to meet with President Biden about his oil and gas policy

UL Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says he expects Biden will take this meeting. “I mean he’s doing something that clearly impacts the constituents of their states and he certainly doesn’t want to alienate a sizable group of Republicans in the Senate,” said Cross. In his first two weeks in office, Biden canceled the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline and issued a moratorium on new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters. Cross says Biden made climate change a priority during his campaign and he does not expect the new President to back off of his positions.

Senator Kennedy votes against certifying President-elect Biden s win

U.S. Senator John Kennedy was one of six US Senators to vote against certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win in the Electoral College. UL Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross said Kennedy has clearly determined the biggest risk to his reelection in 2022 would be if he faces a strong challenger from his right. “In terms of who he needs to support him to get reelected I believe that Senator Kennedy’s vote will not hurt him at all,” said Cross. Senator Bill Cassidy voted to certify the results. Five of the six Senators who voted against certification come from SEC states.
