Funding Available for South Dakota Trails
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota State Parks Director Scott Simpson announced today that applications are being accepted for grants from the Recreation Trails Program (RTP). The grants will be available for trail projects sponsored by municipalities, counties, state parks, federal land management agencies or tribal governments.
“When it comes to promoting healthy communities, recreational trails are key,” Simpson said. “As safe corridors for exercise and recreation, trails give families the opportunity to spend quality time together and enjoy the natural beauty of our state.”
The Recreational Trails Program provides partial reimbursement for approved trail projects. Eligible projects include construction of new public trails, rehabilitation of existing public trails, development of trail-related facilities and educational programs that relate to recreational trails.
Selectwoman, resident want to keep land in China for use as park
The board voted 3-2 on Dec. 7 to sell the 39 acres, but Selectwoman Janet Preston and resident Lindsey Harwath have other ideas for the land.

CHINA Janet Preston of the China Board of Selectmen and resident Lindsey Harwath are hoping to drum up opposition to selling a town-owned, 39.3-acre parcel of land on Lakeview Drive.
Preston was one of the two dissenting selectmen in the 3-2 vote to sell the land at the Dec. 7 board meeting, along with Irene Belanger.
Instead of selling the land, Preston and Harwath, a Democrat who ran for House District 79 in last November’s election, are making an effort to inform the town about an idea to turn the land into a park with trails.

We were cross country skiing up the snow-covered Forest Service road toward Fourmile Lake. The trail offered mostly good conditions, although the main route had obviously been traveled by snowmobiles and a few other skiers.
The setting was serene. Mike Reeder and I glided along the steady but gradual uphill trail, glad to be outside in the idyllic winter setting. Because it was a weekday, we had the trail to ourselves. The quiet swoosh of our skis was only infrequently interrupted when snow-burdened trees suddenly unloaded branch loads of snow.
A couple of miles into our ski, the stillness was broken by an increasingly louder sound of an engine. Into sight came a large snowcat slowly making its way downhill, carving and leaving in its wake a broad path and a crenulated corduroy track. We stepped aside as it passed alongside. Its operators, Ken Crutchfield and Jim Goosen, paused long enough to exchange greetings before forging on. Their snowcat was a 2015 PistenBully, one of two own
