The Community Voice: Finding a program to give kids a break

June 25, 2021 With the recent reopening of California, I could not be happier to be sharing with you our summer community programming. We are starting to see signs of the “old normal.”  The youth in our community have completed an entire year of virtual and/or hybrid learning. It’s been amazing to watch the resiliency of our kids during this time. For some, the transition to virtual school was seamless with minor impacts. For others, it was one of the most challenging experiences of their lives to date, and the impacts have been substantial. In either case, completion of this school year demands celebration and congratulations to kids, parents, and educators. We hope parents will check out all of our summer offerings. We hope you find a program that will give your kids a break from their routine and from their screens.

FishPass Update: A New Party in the Lawsuit and a Change from the City

9 & 10 News April 7, 2021 The Fish Pass project in Traverse City is back before a judge – with a new defendant asking to join in the lawsuit.  And the latest update includes a change in strategy from the city: whether the site is even on city parkland after all. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission wants to join in on the suit, brought forward by a Traverse City resident who is suing the city.  Construction on the 20 million dollar project was put on hold as the court hears the arguments about whether FishPass should require approval of city voters. Attorney Scott Howard represents the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. He says, “We aren’t asking for any new claims or extension of timelines… we would agree the case should move forward as it is scheduled and wouldn’t ask for any delay or changes to the court’s scheduling order.”
