Before the pandemic, battle-hardened commuters would have to pay for their Pret coffee as they navigated the morning rush hour. But soon the promise of a drink or sandwich will come as a freebie to entice workers back on to trains and buses. Technology is being developed for apps run by train and bus operators handing passengers with freebies when they log on. By helping operators understand how busy services are, passengers could be sent a QR code to redeem on the high street. Even using public transport to be vaccinated could lead to a reward. Zipabout, the company behind the initiative, has successfully trialled the technology in Oxford between the local bus company and Pret a Manger, and now hopes to roll it out nationwide. Passengers in Oxford have used the bus operator’s Facebook messenger service to answer questions about their journey. A Zipabout spokesman said there was no requirement for passengers to share their personal data. Facebook’s Ali Parr said: “
