Cracked bridge over Mississippi River highlights supply chain vulnerabilities Doha Madani
A crack in the Interstate 40 bridge in Memphis, Tennessee, highlights some of the nation’s biggest supply chain vulnerabilities, but engineers are hopeful they may be able to at least reopen shipping on the Mississippi River in the next week to alleviate some of the strain.
The Hernando de Soto Bridge, a vital Midwest shipping route that connects Arkansas and Tennessee, has been shut down to thousands of vehicles and barges. Engineers are working on a fix for the 48-year-old bridge but are unsure how drastic the repair effort will be, said Paul Degges, chief engineer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Impact fees help pay for infrastructure needs created by new development
Florida s population has grown from 18.8 million to 21.5 million over the past 10 years
DAYTONA BEACH As Florida s roads become increasingly clogged amid the unrelenting stream of newcomers, state lawmakers have passed a bill that limits how much counties and cities can raise impact fees to accommodate that growth.
The bill, which Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign into law, caps impact fee increases to no more than 12.5% in a given year and no more than 50% over a four-year period. I m disappointed and even a little bit surprised, said Volusia County Chair Jeff Brower. He described the recently passed bill, HB 337, as an unnecessary effort by state lawmakers to take away the decision-making ability of local governments.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg didn t hit the road on Thursday, he took to the water in an effort to gain support for the administration s $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan.
Pennsylvania has the second-most structurally deficient bridges in the United States, according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association. Some of the older bridges have to be draped with nets designed to capture pieces of concrete that could plummet to the sidewalk. We re relying on infrastructure from the last century, Buttigieg told ABC News Transportation Correspondent Gio Benitez as they traveled by boat down the Ohio River.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe McGuinness recently announced $100.2 million in state matching funds have been distributed to local government agencies to support road and bridge projects.
The funding, provided through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program, has been divided among 218 cities, towns and counties. A component of Holcomb’s Next Level Roads program, Community Crossings dedicates funding specifically for local road and bridge improvements.
