Wood had been searching for detailed historical datasets for over 10 years, and Kuris’ was only the second one she’d found. There simply weren’t many folks working decades ago who took thorough records of data like the number of parasites in each host and the body size of each host two pieces of information crucial for comparing historical and contemporary ecosystems, she explained.
“It’s almost impossible to get any time depth on trajectories of parasite change for this reason,” Wood said. “We have no idea how parasites have been changing for the past couple of decades. We’re just flying blind.”

Scientists have given up hope on fully eradicating the invasive European green crabs that dominate the Seadrift Lagoon, after a research effort there went awry. They are now recommending keeping the population at a manageable threshold.
The attempt to eliminate the species, which is ranked among the 100 worst invasives worldwide, in the lagoon was nearing success until 2014, when the population exploded by a magnitude of 30. The explanation? Scientists had focused on taking the adult crabs, but because they are cannibalistic and consume their young, their absence inadvertently allowed the population to proliferate.

Two women died after the car they were in plunged over a cliff and dropped close to 100-feet into Bodega Bay coastal waters, authorities said Sunday.
Firefighters arrived at the west parking lot of the Bodega Bay Head Trail at 11:05 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports that a vehicle carrying two women drove through the guardrail, said Capt. Justin Fox, of the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District.
