RE-ELECTED: Bathai
Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) president, Tshepo Bathai, says he is happy to have retained his sea this past Saturday.
Bathai says he still has a lot to offer as he plans to revitalize local karate. “Being elected back into the committee means a great deal to me as I have intentions of taking this sport forward and the voters chose right. Furthermore, being back at the helm of BOKA means there will be continuity of some of the previous projects that were already on motion, thus improving sport and creating more opportunities for our karatekas locally and internationally,” he said.
BOKA, BOTESSA unite to develop local karate
In their continued bid to take the high-flying sport to the very top, Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) have secured another exciting new partnership.
Hot on the heels of their landmark deal with Kalafhi Medical Center, the karate kingpins have now teamed up with Botswana Tertiary School Sports Association (BOTESSA).
Officially launched this Tuesday, the five-year collaboration aims to develop local karate from tertiary roots to national level.
Beaming with excitement as he briefed the media on the deal’s finer details, BOTESSA President, Keorapetse Setlhare noted the country’s higher-education institutes were blessed with a wealth of sporting talent.

P41 million needed for the international event
After winning the rights to host the 2023 Commonwealth Karate Federation Championship last year, Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) has started its preparations for the historic event.
Botswana will be the second African country to host the international tournament after South Africa hosted it on two occasions (2009 in Johannesburg and 2018 in Durban).
BOKA saw off tough competition from Barbados and Sri Lanka to get the nod from Commonwealth Karate Federation.
With just two years left, the association is in the process of assembling a Local Organising Committee (LOC), for the sporting event expected to set the government back a cool P41 million.
The announcement of Revaka’s passing by the BOKA president Tshepo Bathai left many in shock.
“It’s with great sadness that I am informing you of the sudden passing of our National Team athlete Philippe Revaka. It is a great loss to the Nation and Botswana Karate Association. Condolences to the family and friends,” Bathai announced through a Facebook post.
Reacting to the news, national team athlete and a long-time teammate of Revaka sensei Ofentse Bakwadi, said the untimely passing of the youthful athlete came as a shock.
“When we last talked, he was telling me that he is preparing to get back to competitive karate. He told me he had started training,” Bakwadi, who was Revaka’s instructor said.
