FORT DRUM â When he took the reins in 2019 as the new commander of Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division, Maj. Gen. Brian J. Mennes said it was like coming home. During a Change of Command Ceremony Monday afternoon, he passed those reins on to Brig. Gen. Milford H. âBeagsâ Beagle Jr., who shared a similar sentiment.
Maj. Gen. Mennes will soon be relocated to Washington state where he will serve as the deputy commanding general, I Corps, Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Brig. Gen. Brett T. Funck, who currently serves as deputy commanding general of operations and acting senior commander, will relocate to Washington, D.C., where he will serve as director of the Talent Management Task Force, office of the deputy chief of staff, G-1.

WATERTOWN â Retired Fort Drum soldier Steve Roberts worries about what will happen to Afghanistan after U.S. forces totally pull out of our countryâs longest war.
Mr. Roberts, 54, who served a year in Afghanistan at the warâs height, fears what comes next for Afghanistan â whether the Taliban will take over after the U.S. leaves and what happens to its people.
It has been alarming just how quickly the pullout is taking place, with Mr. Roberts hearing that 90% of U.S. forces have already left Afghanistan.
âA lot of it worries me,â he said. âItâs making me anxious. Itâs scaring me the most: Who is going to fill in that void? The Afghan soldiers? The Afghan people themselves?â
