1 dead after crash into power pole in NE Portland

Updated: 9:06 AM PDT May 7, 2021 PORTLAND, Ore. A 25-year-old man was killed when the car he was riding in crashed into a power pole in Northeast Portland late Thursday night.  The driver, 29-year-old Anthony L. Soto of Portland, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving and reckless endangering. Investigators said Soto was speeding in a Chevrolet Tahoe when he crashed into a power pole, shearing it off at the base. Soto was injured in the crash but is expected to survive, police said. The crash caused enough damage to the power pole to threaten power lines. Utility crews made repairs overnight.

It followed a pedestrian death the day before and an increase in 2020, despite a reduction in driving for much of that year caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to police, the driver of a vehicle died and another person is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following a morning crash on Jan. 1. The driver in the New Year s Day crash is identified as Daniel Martinez, 19, of Portland. The two passengers are not being identified. One is seriously injured.

The vehicle crashed into a pole shortly after 7 a.m. at Southeast Division Street and Southeast 112th Avenue, police said. Major and small roads in the area remain closed Friday morning to allow investigators to better understand what occurred.
