It must be admitted that I was a couple of days late changing my calendar to February, but what did I see? Yes, Valentine’s Day is there alright, but someone has gone and made a holiday weekend of it as well. How dare they do such a thing anyway? Well, a holiday is a holiday. But I was going to tell a few stories about St.Valentines Day, wasn’t I?

Remember going to school and making valentines? It was a regular February school activity, and I believe the teachers looked forward to it. I know the kids did. And to make the shape of a heart come outright, you would fold the red paper in half and scissor it just right. Sometimes it came out heart-shaped. A carefully scribbled “I love you” or “Be my Valentine” finished it. The boys addressed theirs to a secret girl, and as for the girls, I never did find out what they did as I never got one!
Born in rural Manitoba, Cantin’s career in pharmacy took her around Manitoba, settling in the Flin Flon area and serving as the Northern Health Region’s director of pharmacy. Cantin was also a president of the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association and a former chair of the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities, also holding posts with other provincial and national pharmacy groups. Cantin died last year after a battle with cancer. Cantin was a member of the Canadian national alpine skiing team in her youth and held belts in Taekwondo and judo, coached soccer and was a supporter of the Flin Flon Community Choir.
