Ensure Security and Dignity for All Brussels (MOREL)- When EU leaders meet for the Porto Social Summit this weekend, they should show real commitment to the needs of European citizens facing hardship and precarious situations. Rather than expecting wonders from the failed workfare paradigm, they should embrace a new concept of social citizenship. It is time to move towards an unconditional guarantee of economic existence and dignity for all. Unconditional Basic Income Europe (UBIE) welcomes the Portuguese EU presidency’s focus on EU citizens’ social rights and protection across the Union. We appreciate the ambition of the European Commission to go beyond symbolic declarations and set measurable targets for the proposed Action Plan. The scope of the planned measures, however, is regrettably weak. The poverty reduction proposals are shamefully unambitious, especially since the Union failed to meet its poverty

ATHENS The European Union Roadmap for Social Cohesion over the next 10 years, as well as the coordination of the EU member-states with regard to the green certificate, the vaccination programmes and the vaccine patents are expected to be raised during the informal EU summit on Friday, the first to be held live since last December.
The summit will take place on May 7-8, in Porto, Portugal.
Regarding the issue of a Covid-19 vaccine patents waiver, government sources noted that the issue had already been raised by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in April and May 2020, in order to reduce the gap between the developed and developing countries.

LISBON, May 7 (Xinhua) - Europe s post-pandemic economic recovery will only succeed if it is fair and inclusive, said Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa on Friday as he opened the Porto Social Summit, an event hosted by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Echoing Costa s message, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that Europe is stronger when it is united by social programs. Together we are stronger, together we can make our social rules work for all Europeans. Together we can deliver on Europe s promise, she said.

President Klaus Iohannis is attending, Friday and Saturday, in Portugal s City of Porto, within the Social Summit, the informal reunion of the European Council, as well as in the EU-India Summit in videoconference format, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Presidential Administration informs.
The Porto Social Summit has as central topic the optimal implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights. The event targets drawing up the priorities of the social agenda for the next decade, so that it responds to the challenges of the green and digital transition.
President Klaus Iohannis will have an intervention during the second thematic session regarding competencies and innovation, in the panel on education, competencies and innovation.
