NEW JERSEY (WABC) New Jersey is under a state of emergency as several inches of snow fell Wednesday and into the early morning hours on Thursday. Snowplows were out in full force with a cleanup effort.
The state of emergency was set to expire at 10 a.m., except in Passaic, Bergen, Essex, Union, and Hudson counties where it will continue until 1 p.m. Whatever melts may refreeze overnight, so we want everyone to be cautious when venturing out, Governor Phil Murphy said on Thursday morning. We re moving out of this, but we re not out of it yet so please be careful.
Four inches of snow fell in Deptford by 8 p.m. Wednesday, while Bridgeton recorded only a half-inch, the report said.
Powerful winds in coastal areas gusted at 55 mph in Atlantic City shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday and hit 56 mph in Cape May shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday, the Weather Service said.
A gust of 47 mph hit Joint Base McGuire-Fort Dix-Lakehurst shortly before midnight.
The Weather Service said strong winds would likely continue in South Jersey on Thursday, with gusts as high as 30 mph. It said additional snow accumulation of less than one inch was possible, with conditions expected to be clear but cold on Friday and Saturday.

Most NJ Transit service remains suspended Thursday morning
New Jersey is still feeling the impact of the first winter storm of the season on Thursday morning with the suspension of most NJ Transit service and lots of school closings. Our nor easter will finally wind down Thursday morning, although a shower or flurry and breezy conditions will remain possible through early afternoon, Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said.
Many schools canceled classes for the day, although in a 2020 twist on the snow day many still held virtual classes while closing their buildings. Hamilton School Superintendent Scott Rocco tried to have the best of both worlds by holding a one session day of classes followed by fun in the snow.
