All Cayuga County-area school budgets, propositions pass

The Citizen staff Voters in the Weedsport Central School District approved a $7.6 million capital project in addition to the district s $20 million budget Tuesday night. The capital improvement project passed by a vote of 319-165, and the budget passed 372-113. The school district said the capital improvement project will address aging infrastructure at both schools, enhance the district’s performing arts program with auditorium upgrades, and overhaul the athletic complex. “As we look ahead to next school year, we feel this budget sets up our students and staff for successful daily, in-person learning,” said Superintendent Shaun O’Connor in a statement. “We are so thankful for the support of the Weedsport community, and we look forward to completing these needed-upgrades to ensure our students can make the most of their education.

Port Byron school district making administrative changes

The Port Byron Central School District is eliminating its assistant principal positions in response to declining enrollment. In addition to the upcoming transition of Dana West Jr.-Sr. High School Principal Mike Jorgensen becoming the district s next superintendent on July 1, there are various other administrative changes lined up for the next school year. Current Superintendent Neil O Brien, who has been with Port Byron since 2004 and whose last day will be June 30, said in a district newsletter that Jorgensen s promotion has resulted in alterations in personnel and the district s administrative structure. The assistant principal spots for both school buildings will be eliminated as the district trims the number of administrators because of sliding enrollment.

Selfless shots: For Cayuga County-area residents, COVID-19 vaccine protects family

AURELIUS — Bridget Kennedy wasn t thinking of herself when she received the second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday.  For Kennedy, an Auburn resident who is a teacher with the Port Byron Central School District, getting vaccinated was more about the safety of those at home.  I got it to protect my kids, she said. Her children are too young to get the vaccine.  The Citizen interviewed Kennedy and others at a clinic held by the Cayuga County Health Department at Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius. Hundreds of residents, many of whom received their first dose of the vaccine at Port Byron, were there to get their second dose. (The Moderna vaccine, like the Pfizer vaccine, requires two doses. Johnson & Johnson has a single-dose vaccination.)
