Activities in the Nigerian maritime sector in 2020 were greeted with mixed feelings as the sector witnessed a lot of ups and downs.
In the first quarter of 2020, the sector recorded great improvement across the nation’s seaports as maritime activities boomed. Container traffics across the nation’s six seaports were on the increase due to local and foreign patronage by investors.
The ports within the period recorded high volume in foreign vessels. In the two ports in Rivers State – Onne and Rivers Port Complex, for instance, the volume of container traffic was so high that importers and clearing agents were smiling to the banks. It also generated huge revenue for the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the government.

FAAN management disclosed this in a series of tweets on the agency’s official handle.
The agency also urged all travellers and airport users to strictly abide by all laid down travel protocols, adding that a compliance monitoring team has been constituted at the airports to drive total compliance.
The tweet read, “As the world grapples with the second wave of the dreaded coronavirus pandemic, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has stepped up measures to ensure the safety of travelling.
“Passengers and other airport users across the nation from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Port Harcourt International Airport, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport and others within its network, the Authority is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure safe and secure facilitation of travellers.

As yuletide approaches, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has notified air travelers and other airport users that its airports across the country are fully prepared for the usual surge in passenger traffic.
“In preparation for the season and beyond, we have beefed up security at all our airports, especially the major international gateways in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano.
“We have also put in place necessary infrastructure to aid compliance with stipulated protocols on Covid-19.
“In addition, we are intensifying our effort at improving facilities to ensure maximum comfort for all airport users. At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Port Harcourt International Airport, the new terminals are fully ready to play host to our esteemed passengers in safe, secure and very comfortable ambiences,” the agency said in a statement.
